Bernard is the third son of a minor Norman lord named Robert le Jeun, who lived on a small feif in Barfleur, a port on the Cotenin peninsula. Bernard was initially trained for administrative skills, not being very physically fit as a child. Only later in life did he pick up the sword and embark on a semi-military career. Bernard struck up the adventuring spirit upon the death of his father, as he did not wish to be around his oldest brother when he reclaimed the family lands, nor to be around the middle brother and his shrewish wife. He prefers to be campaigning, or sailing, or riding, or anything, due to the fact that his mother tends to travel between all her sons, and his mother in law lives with him. Campaigning, in the winter, during a blizzard, hungry, on foot, under attack, while sick is better than being in a room with either or both mothers. Damn the convent for not taking them!
