| Ysabiau was raised by her three older brothers who were left
with the task of her upbringing while her grieving father dealt with the
double loss of a post - oligarchic government and his beloved wife. Ysabiau
excelled in music, philosophy, warfare and government (unheard of!) but
had questionable table manners and atrocious embroidery skills that improved,
dramatically, at the sight of a switch (heard of). She earned the nickname
“Jolicoeur” from her favorite brother and musical mentor after he got over
being angry with her for disguising herself as a foot soldier and following
him on crusade. She fought competently and made it back to Avignon alive
and without being disowned. Her nerve-racked father sent her off to Anjou
in the hope that her mother’s side of the family would have better luck.
As she began her travels with her Anjou relatives she fancied herself as
one of the few remaining troubaritz. Exhausted from dealing with Ysabiau’s
rather unique personality and grateful for a focus to her intellect, the
Anjou entourage encouraged her musical enterprises. She gained renown for her chansons in many courts. |
