"I am often asked about the hand. It's a hand of benediction used by both Catholics and Buddhists as a general blessing and that
appeals to me. Also, it's very common for massage therapists to use hands as icons, and as one of those, my hands are an
important focus for me. This hand also happens to be a "sinister" hand of benediction. Well, first off I'm a lefty,
and secondly I appreciate the pun."
"The blue cat represents my cat Pyewackett, who was bluish gray in color, and liked
to stand up on her hind legs to get petted. The rose wreath is a symbol of the Order of the Rose, of which I am a member.
The roses are black in order to complete my favorite color scheme of blue, white and black."
"I am a fan of St. Christopher, the patron saint
of travelers. One of his miracles is:
He was struck by lighting and glowed.
It is now believed that he was hit by ball lightning.
I was looking for an easy to draw symbol, so I added
the story to the Von Weisenkrieg tree.
My grandfather was on crusade:
It was a dark and stormy night when the camp was
attacked. Grandfather was sleeping in his armor.
This is an ability, I have inherited. So he was
the first to chase the heathens off.
While in front of the charge, he was struck by
lightning. It did not harm him, it just made him
GLOW. The infidels ran from the glowing warrior.
The lightning bolt then became the family badge.
I am the fourth son, so I have the chevron inverse
azure in the chief argent."
"Compass rose:
My persona is a Spanish sailor so that is in part where the compass rose
comes from. The second reason for the compass rose is Steve Lane is the
son of a marine biologist and therefore grew up around the ocean. The
third reason is that I found the SCA when I was up north at college. I
spent a lot of time in North Shield and their device is a compass rose.
Fleur de lys:
My persona before I became Esteban (Steve in Spanish) was Etien (Steve
in French). While looking up info on my French persona I kept coming
across fleur de lys everywhere. One of the things the fleur de lys has
been know to represent is the Holy Trinity. My persona is not a very
religious guy so for Esteban the Fleur represents his holy trilogy:
beer, wine and mead *ASGARD*. Since the Fleur represents a trilogy it
just makes sense to have three of them on my device."
"Crane are the Celtic sign of peace, the spearhead is an obvious sign of war. My name traslates to 'beautiful lady of peace',
however, like my motto says provoke my peacefulness and get the haft!"
"My arms:
The harp represents my love of music, the estoiles my love of astronomy.
My badge:
As I have red hair, and my name, La Rousse means The Red to
identify a red-headed person, I chose a red hare (HAIR). The black border
is a giant freckle. :-)"
"It's just good looking.
And most importantly, it looks really cool when done as a marriage of arms with my wife.
I could say some bull about how the black, blue and white signify the dark ocean on a storm, the
type of storm that regularly hits the port of Barfleur on the Cotenin peninsula, and that the
sea unicorn shows the purity of those who ply the deep ocean, but that would be just too over
the edge. Because really the ocean is, pardon my french, a bitch on a bad day, and those that
are typically drawn to serve her tend to be a tad bit unpure, if not downright scum (at least,
in period). I know, from being out on her, that she'll turn on you like a psycotic rotweiller."
"The green background is for Ireland, the red rose is my favorite flower and favorite symbol in general
(to go with my rose tattoo). Gold is my favorite metal."
